Over 100 students from B.M.C. Durfee and New Bedford high schools as well as teachers and staff from a number of outreach programs gathered at the Fall River Boys and Girls Club on March 22, 2013 for an opportunity to talk with Ameena Matthews of Chicago's CeaseFire organiztion and to view a documentary of her work, 'The Interrupters documents the work of the CeaseFire group in Chicago to establish relationships with people affected by violence and working to get them to channel their anger in non-violent ways. Working with the Peace by Piece Coalition and Youth CHOICES group. United Neighbors of Fall River Executive Director Wendy Garf-Lipp arranged to bring Ms. Matthews to Fall River to talk with youth from Fall River and New Bedford about violence in their lives and ways that they might work to interrupt the pattern of retaliation that often continues revenge killings. The day provided an opportunity for the youth to meet with Ms. Matthews and to talk with her in depth about how they deal with the violence in their own lives.
